Our last bass trip of these spring tides. Members of the Badgers Bum SAC found themselves in great conditions but the reducing tidal range also saw a reduction in bass numbers. The guys were however rewarded with some fine quality bass. Good to see reasonable numbers of bigger fish finally arrive.
Saturday 17th June 06
Bright sunshine, a flat sea in mid channel and a few fish. All in all, a pretty good day for Brian Newcombe and the lads from Oxford. Good numbers of pollock, mostly doubles and 15 cod up to 17lb.
Many thanks lads for taking so much time and effort to make the boat so clean and tidy at the end of fishing. It was the cleanest that I have ever seen anglers make it. What a shame that there wasn't a potential boat buyer on the Quay to see it!

A 19lb cod for George
Father Ted with a brace of medium sized cod.
Take a look at the glass-like background in these two photos. This was the second day in a row that we have had conditions like these, and very welcome they have been. Today also seemed like the hottest day afloat this year. Fishing wasn't to bad either. The cod catch was down slightly with just a dozen to 19lb, but the pollock including many doubles were far more plentiful. It is such a shame that these fish can't be returned. Ah well! I guess it's pollock and chips for the next few months.

Following 4 days of fresh winds and cancelled trips, it was good to be back on the sea again. The "A Team" (See "Club News" if you would like to join them. They are looking for more anglers) were out with me on another wrecking trip. The fishing was down on the previous weekend but the lads still managed a dozen cod to 17lb and a similar amount of pollock to around 12lb.
Saturday 24th June 06
An inshore trip for some American service personel who caught a reasonable selection of species using hired tackle. Great company and some fine conditions made for a very pleasurable day. Fish caught included mackerel, dogfish, bream, smoothound, red and tub gurnard, bass, and pout.
Young Bernard with the first of the bass.
Sunday 25th June 06
Bass fishing with a new group of anglers from London. Not the best tide to target the bass and this was reflected in our total for the day. Just 11 landed and none over 3lb. A nice bunch of lads who I hope will come again and enjoy better fortunes.
Monday 26th - Wednesday 28th June 06
Three days of bass fishing that saw fortunes steadily increase throughout. The last day being our best bass trip this year, although with just two bass in the boat by midday and with a fresh easterly wind, things were not looking to good for a while. Thankfully the afternoon tide saw bass in abundance with many of the crew landing at least one fish per drift. There seems to be a lot more smaller fish in the bay than usual but the last couple of days has shown a slight improvement in quality. Most fish falling to 4 inch storm shads. Whites, blues and pearl colour appear to be the favourite choice of most anglers. Good numbers of bass have been released. The picture shows bass regular and local angler, Mark Skinner with a brace of medium sized bass caught during a hectic afternoon session.

A corporate type wrecking trip for APPLIED ENERGY PRODUCTS. The crew were made up of mainly novices using boat provided PENN tackle. Although conditions were not ideal at first, by midday the lads were enjoying some great weather. Sunshine and a flat sea. Considering the lads lack of experience, they did well to land a reasonable number of cod to just short of 21lb and pollock to around 14lb. And they did their bit for the future of our sport by adding too, and increasing the size of the wreck that we fished. Sadly, it was all my tackle that they left down there. Overall, a very good day with good company, conditions and fish. Thanks to Pat for giving up a days work to come and crew.
These were the best of 8 cod. Down on recent catches, but there were plenty of obliging pollock. 5inch Calcutta shads worked well for the cod.
